Remember: you are responsible for your own safety and for the safety of those around you.

Hiking is a fun way to see our nation’s forests and grasslands. The USDA Forest Service wants you to make it home safe from your hiking adventure! Please follow these tips:

    • Share your itinerary with a friend or family member and check in with them when you return.
    • Check the weather forecast and be prepared by wearing appropriate clothing and footwear.
    • Bring the essentials (compass, map, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, flashlight, waterproof matches, first aid kit, water, snacks, and extra clothing).
    • Have an emergency plan and share it with your group. Make sure everyone knows what to do if they are lost or injured. For example, give children whistles with instruction to “stop and blow” if they become lost.
    • Stay on marked trails and don’t hike alone; stay aware of your surroundings.
    • If you fall, do not try to catch yourself. Try to land on your side. Avoid landing on your hands, elbows or knees.
    • Take your time and rest along the way. Let the slowest member of your group set the pace.
    • Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water, even on cool wet days. Remember: do not drink your entire supply between refills.
